Privacy Policy
Last updated: 26 April 2026
Nook (“we”, “us”) operates nooklang.com. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how you can control it. If you have questions, email [email protected].
1. Data we collect
Account data — when you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, profile picture URL, and a Google account identifier. We store these to create and identify your account.
Preferences— the languages you're studying and your timezone. You choose these during onboarding and can change them in Settings at any time.
Usage data — in future versions of Nook we will record which videos you have watched and which vocabulary items you have reviewed, so we can track your progress and schedule spaced repetition. This is not yet active.
Session cookie — a single HTTP-only, Secure cookie named nook_session that identifies your login session. It expires after 30 days. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels.
2. How we use your data
- To authenticate you and keep you signed in.
- To personalise the video library to your chosen languages.
- To send transactional emails (welcome, progress summaries) — only if you have signed in.
- To improve Nook's content quality (aggregate, anonymised usage patterns only).
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell or rent your data to third parties.
3. Third-party services
Running Nook requires the following third-party processors. Each processes only the data necessary for its function.
- Google OAuth — handles sign-in. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- Supabase / PostgreSQL — stores your account data and learning content on EU-region servers.
- Anthropic (Claude API) — processes YouTube transcript text to produce translations and vocabulary definitions during content ingestion. Your personal data is never sent to Anthropic.
- YouTube Data API — used to fetch video metadata (title, thumbnail, duration). Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- Resend — transactional email delivery. Only your email address is shared.
4. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate data.
- Delete your account and all associated data.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days. Account deletion will be available directly in Settings shortly.
5. Data retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all personal data is erased within 30 days. Aggregated, anonymised analytics may be retained indefinitely.
6. Children
Nook is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Nook evolves. Material changes will be announced by email and on this page. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
